Nagel-Group, a logistics specialist in food transportation, launched a pilot project in December 2024 at its Borgholzhausen site with the introduction of the Nagel Driver Terminal. The initiative seeks to streamline driver management, eliminate language barriers, reduce waiting times, and minimise manual processes. According to a study by the Cologne Institute for Economic Research, one in four drivers in Germany is of foreign nationality. In 2020, 23.6% of truck drivers in Germany came from other countries, reflecting an increasingly international workforce. Nagel-Group itself employs specialists from 92 different nations. While this diversity is a strength, it also presents significant communication challenges.
To address these needs, the Nagel Driver Terminal uses intuitive, multilingual software designed to ensure independent, fast check-in processes free from communication obstacles. “With this solution, we are tackling industry challenges and creating added value for both drivers and our on-site teams,” says Michael Lütjann, CIO of Nagel-Group.
The Nagel Driver Terminal resembles the self-service kiosks already common in fast-food restaurants. With its simple, user-friendly interface, drivers can autonomously complete the check-in process. The multilingual interface ensures seamless communication even in international settings. Additionally, an integrated mobile app and associated terminals provide significant flexibility for both drivers and operational staff. This approach reduces waiting times, simplifies administrative tasks, and improves overall efficiency.
“The Nagel Driver Terminal marks a significant step towards modernising our processes, making them more efficient. It demonstrates how technological innovation can ease employees’ workloads and enhance the service provided to drivers,” emphasises Jens Kleiner, COO of Nagel-Group. Following initial tests in Borgholzhausen, the next implementation site will be Groß-Gerau, with the aim of further improving the system’s functionalities before rolling it out across the entire Nagel-Group network. The pilot project has been developed in close collaboration with P3, a technology consulting and software development company. With a global presence and proven expertise in electric mobility and supply chain sectors, P3 has provided essential know-how to ensure the project’s success.
