On April 7, 2024, the Port of Naples celebrated the arrival of a new and impressive floating dry dock from the Port of Hamad in Qatar. Capable of accommodating ships up to 230 meters in length and with a lifting capacity of about 27,000 tons, this facility signifies a major advancement for the Campanian port in the shipbuilding industry, especially for major repairs.
The infrastructure was developed by Napoli Dry Docks, a joint venture between La Nuova Meccanica Navale and the Palumbo Group Naples, with an investment of approximately 40 million euros. The new dock, to be located in the water area already granted to Napoli Dry Docks at Molo Martello, is expected to be in use for about three hundred days a year. It will accommodate 20-25 ships, with an average stay of fifteen days per vessel. The employment and economic impact of the investment will be significant for Naples and the entire region, considering that each ship under repair employs an average of about one hundred people per day, generating 250-300 thousand annual work hours.
