By 2026, the La Spezia port is set to feature a state-of-the-art freight railway station, capable of handling half of the containers transported by rail from the port. This development is spearheaded by the nine-million-euro grant received from the Eastern Ligurian Sea Port Authority for the Swiftrail project, under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Transport Call 2023. This funding is supplemented by an additional 39 million euros previously acquired from the CIPE ministry funds. The Swiftrail initiative also includes the analysis and enhancement of the railway flows to and from the La Spezia port, focusing particularly on the improvement of the Pontremolese line. Construction for the new railway station is scheduled to commence in February 2024.
