At the beginning of January 2025, PSA Venice-Vecon announced that it had become the first container terminal in Italy to receive the gender equality certification. The accolade, awarded under the UNI/PdR 125:2022 guidelines, marks a significant step forward in fostering inclusion and equity in the maritime transport sector. Roberto Ferrari, CEO of PSA Italy, stated, “Our company is the first of its kind to achieve gender equality certification—a meaningful recognition that goes beyond mere regulatory compliance, serving as a tangible example of commitment to creating a fair and inclusive working environment.”
The certification, which is valid for three years and subject to annual review, is the outcome of an assessment conducted in line with CEI EN ISO/IEC 17021-1 standards. This evaluation is based on a set of key criteria, including pay equity, inclusive policies, and human resource management practices that prioritise respect and inclusion. Developed as part of Mission 5 of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) in collaboration with the Department for Equal Opportunities and other institutional bodies, the UNI/PdR 125:2022 guidelines have become a vital benchmark for companies aiming to ensure internal gender equality.
PSA Venice-Vecon has embarked on an organisational transformation, revising its human resources protocols and management systems to structurally integrate the principle of equity. This commitment has been further demonstrated through the calculation of specific performance indicators (KPIs), referred to as Strategic Evaluation Areas, which include metrics such as the elimination of gender-based pay disparities and equal access to career advancement opportunities. Moreover, the company has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against all forms of discrimination and aims to further improve by 2026 through specific, measurable objectives.
The Strategic Evaluation Areas form the foundation of the certification and encompass, in addition to pay equity, the alignment of inclusion principles with the company’s vision, policies supporting parenthood, and work-life balance initiatives. These aspects not only foster a more inclusive work environment but also significantly enhance organisational performance. Daniele Marchiori, General Manager of the terminal, emphasised this point: “Gender equality is a crucial factor for economic growth and development. Fully harnessing female talent is essential for economic progress, and the presence of women in decision-making positions is linked to better business performance.”
