In April 2024, Rhenus Logistics expanded its logistics operations across Ireland, Belgium, and Great Britain. The German company inaugurated new platforms in Dublin and Nuneaton and took full control of the internal shipping company Dga Shipping. This expansion in Dublin includes a new 11,150 square meter logistics facility operated by Rhenus Ireland, offering services across various sectors such as energy, life sciences, healthcare, industry, retail, chemicals, food, and automotive. The facility boasts a Gold Leed certification, twelve loading docks, and an internal free height of 17 meters, including a temperature-controlled storage area.
Earlier in 2024, Rhenus Ireland doubled its logistics space to 20,000 square meters at the Parkmore park in Galway and acquired the logistics company Source & Supply Logistics. In the UK, Rhenus Warehousing Solutions UK opened the Rhenus Campus in Nuneaton, consisting of two warehouses of 19,500 and 71,600 square meters, both achieving Breeam Outstanding environmental certification. Sustainable features include CLT wooden floors that contain 64% less embedded carbon than standard floors, and three air-source heat pumps for office heating and frost protection in the warehouses. The site also includes eighty electric vehicle charging points.
Electric power is generated on-site through 2,288 solar panels, each 415 watts, with a total system capacity exceeding 949 kWp. This system is expected to generate approximately 870,000 kWh per year, equivalent to the annual energy consumption of around 250 homes. The campus also features extensive green spaces, homes for local wildlife, and between 700 and 900 native trees. Employees have access to on-site gardens, sports fields, a walking/biking trail, and an outdoor gym.
Additionally, Rhenus Logistics is expanding its inland waterway transport activities through its subsidiary Rhenus PartnerShip, which, in April, secured control of Dga Shipping, a river navigation company in Belgium covering the Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Antwerp region. Previously holding a 45% stake in Dga Shipping, Rhenus acquired the remaining shares from Hgk Shipping, now owning the company outright. Steffen Bauer, CEO of HGK Shipping, noted the sale of their shares in Dga Shipping is part of a strategy to divest holdings and reinvest in the continuous strategic development of HGK Shipping, particularly in new business units. Thomas Maassen, CEO of Rhenus PartnerShip, stated that full ownership enables the company to consolidate its market position, enhance customer support flexibility, maximize synergies, utilize resources more efficiently, and offer an even broader and better service portfolio.
