The 2024 UN Climate Change Conference, scheduled to take place in Baku, will feature the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29), the 19th meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP19), and the 6th meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement (CMA6). The organizing committee of COP29 is chaired by Samir Nuriyev, head of the Presidential Administration of Azerbaijan, and includes 56 members, such as ministers, National Assembly members, and other state authority leaders.
Key objectives for COP29 include limiting global warming to 1.5°C, developing the Loss and Damage Fund to support vulnerable communities, enhancing Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) in line with the 1.5°C targets, urging all countries to establish National Adaptation Plans by 2025, and increasing climate finance to foster investment in green innovation.
The COP29 presidency has launched several initiatives to accelerate climate action, including the Climate Finance Action Fund (CFAF), aimed at catalyzing public and private sector involvement in mitigation, adaptation, and R&D; the Baku Initiative for Climate Finance, Investment and Trade (BICFIT), focusing on the nexus between climate finance, investment, and trade; the COP29 Global Energy Storage and Grids Pledge, which commits to boosting global energy storage capacity and improving energy grids; and the COP29 Declaration on Water for Climate Action, promoting integrated approaches to tackle the causes and impacts of climate change on water resources.
