Operational testing of autonomous industrial vehicles has been ongoing for several years, though tests involving the highest level of automation, specifically those without drivers, are only conducted in closed areas. One of the first sectors used as a testing ground is mining. This sector is considered ideal due to its short, fixed routes and reduced personnel needs, thanks to the intensive use of machinery. Now, the next step in this field is being taken: the commencement of vehicle sales.
In May 2024, Scania started in Australia, offering a 40-ton model, which will soon be followed by a 50-ton model. The Swedish manufacturer is now taking orders, with the first deliveries expected in 2026. Latin America is expected to follow, where Scania has a strong presence in the mining industry. The autonomous trucks, which are variants of quarry and construction site models, can replace larger dump trucks in mines, reducing purchase and operating costs, lowering fuel consumption, and increasing safety.
