Spanish road haulage enters 2025 in good shape. This is reflected in the findings of the Encuesta Permanente del Transporte por Carretera conducted by the Ministry of Transport and Mobility, which reported that in 2024 Spanish hauliers moved 1.644 billion tonnes, marking a 2.64% increase compared to the previous year. International transport recorded the highest percentage growth at 4.98%, moving 95.04 million tonnes across Spain’s borders. Data from the fourth quarter confirmed this trend, with 23.50 million tonnes transported, an increase of 21.66% compared to the same period in 2023.
Domestic transport registered a more modest rise of 2.5%, though it remains dominant, accounting for 1.54948 billion tonnes. However, trends within this sector vary. Growth was limited to third-party haulage, which moved 1.42906 billion tonnes, an increase of 3.21%, while own-account transport saw a decline of 0.96%.
However, road transport costs also rose in 2024. The average cost per kilometre increased by 0.98%, primarily due to higher diesel prices and international tolls. The most significant rise was observed in short-distance transport, defined as journeys under fifty kilometres.
