The Genoa railway system has achieved a significant upgrade with the activation of the link between Genoa Pra’ and the Ventimiglia-Genoa line during the night of 6–7 January 2025. The works, involving track infrastructure, overhead lines, and signalling systems in the Voltri area, required a temporary suspension of rail services between Genoa and Savona from 2 to 6 January. This initiative aims to improve railway operations by separating local commuter trains from long-distance services, which will now be routed towards the Principe station and the Third Pass line, thereby enhancing the efficiency of the entire railway hub.
This project is part of the quadrupling of the rail line between Genoa Voltri and Genoa Sampierdarena, which will feature four tracks in total. The two existing tracks will continue to serve local and regional traffic along the coastal route, while two new tracks will cater exclusively to long-distance services. A key component of this endeavour is the construction of the new Polcevera Tunnel, approximately eight kilometres in length, which will connect the Voltri-Borzoli link with Fegino and the Third Pass on one side and the Polcevera Junction and coastal line on the other.
The completion of the quadrupling project will establish a direct link between the port of Genoa Pra’ and the Terzo Valico of the Giovi, facilitating freight train movement and improving the port’s logistical efficiency. The activation of this section is scheduled for August 2025, aiming to increase the capacity and frequency of regional and metropolitan train services while minimising conflicts between different types of rail traffic. Another key element of Genoa’s railway system upgrade is the sextupling of the stretch between Genoa Brignole and Principe stations, slated for activation by December 2025. This enhancement will significantly boost traffic capacity on one of the network’s most congested segments, benefiting both local and long-distance connections.
