Panama's land bridge proposal to combat future droughts
The Panama Canal Authority is considering the creation of a land bridge to increase freight transport capacity and address potential future droughts. Administrator Ricaurte Vasquez Morales has proposed a plan to raise container transit capacity by up to five million TEUs per year by 2045. This land bridge would allow cargo to be moved overland, circumventing the canal's limitations for larger vessels. However, many shipping companies have expressed scepticism, citing increased costs and logistical complexities compared to traditional maritime transit.

Kazakhstan and China to develop new container hub on the Caspian Sea
Kazakhstan and China are building a new container hub in the port of Aktau on the Caspian Sea, aiming to strengthen Kazakhstan's global logistics position. The project, led by Lianyungang Port in collaboration with Aktau Commercial Sea Port, is set for completion by mid-2025, increasing the port's capacity to 240,000 TEUs annually. The terminal will boost container traffic along the Trans-Caspian route and redirect some of the flow from China towards Europe. At the same time, Kazakhstan is expanding its terminal network in Europe, with a new facility in Budapest capable of handling up to 230,000 TEUs, improving intermodal links along the China-Europe route.
