Truck ban on A22
In light of the October 2024 holidays, the Government Commission for the Province of Bolzano has ordered a ban on heavy vehicle traffic on the A22 Brenner motorway on October 26, from 00:00 to 22:00, from Vipiteno to the state border for vehicles over 7.5 tons. Vehicles already on the motorway must park in designated areas. Exceptions are provided for road-rail combined transport with a rail reservation.
Persian Gulf Railway to launch in 2030
Gulf countries are preparing to commence construction of the GCC railway, which will connect member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council. The project, spanning 2,117 km, represents the first railway for Oman, Kuwait, and Bahrain. The start date is set for 2030, with an estimated cost of $250 billion. The goal is to strengthen regional connectivity, promoting economic and trade cooperation among the countries involved.
New railway in Uganda
Uganda plans to build a railway line to connect Tororo, a city in the east, with a proposed new port in the Busia district on Lake Victoria, at a total cost of $600 million. The aim is to improve logistics links through Tanzania to the Indian Ocean. The 60-kilometer railway is the first step toward an extensive railway network that will include a link to the capital, Kampala, and is expected to facilitate freight transport between Uganda and Tanzania.
Judges halt project in Durban port
A South African court has temporarily blocked a deal between state-owned Transnet and the company of Filipino billionaire Enrique Razon to operate the main container terminal at Durban port. The decision followed an appeal by APM Terminals, a subsidiary of Maersk, which challenged the solvency of the bid winner. The order will remain in effect until the second part of the proceedings.
Air France-KLM Cargo returns to Hong Kong
Air France KLM Martinair Cargo has resumed cargo flights to Hong Kong after a nine-year absence. The new service is operated by Martinair with a 110-ton Boeing 747-400, departing from Schiphol. The flight is currently scheduled three times a week, increasing to four weekly flights from October 27. The company highlighted the growing importance of the e-commerce market in East Asia, while other airlines like Qatar Cargo and Lufthansa Cargo are also increasing capacity to the region.
