On the afternoon of 27 March 2025, Trasportounito announced the postponement—without setting a new date—of the strike originally planned for 31 March in Italy. At the same time, it revealed plans for a demonstration to be held on 14 April at Porta Pia, in front of the Ministry of Transport. “It may not be a breach like the one remembered in the history of Porta Pia, but the lorry transport sector will nonetheless send a strong and clear signal with a public demonstration, whose main goal is to shake the inertia of the minister of transport,” explained Maurizio Longo, secretary general of the association.
He added that “rather than bringing vehicles to a halt and risking all the possible consequences, due both to increased pressure from clients and the strong sense of responsibility of a sector already weakened, hauliers, under Trasportounito’s leadership, have decided to shift and refocus their protest against what they describe as ‘one of the worst ministers of transport in the history of the republic’.” Longo concluded by stating that “we believe there is only one measure that would be consistent with the total disregard for the problems facing Italian transport. And that measure is called resignation.”
The Battle of Porta Pia was the military action on 20 September 1870 in which Italian troops breached the Aurelian Walls near Rome, marking the final act of the unification of Italy and the end of the Papal States.
