On the evening of 9 April 2025, as global stock markets fell for the fifth day in a row, President Trump announced on his social network Truth the immediate ninety-day suspension of reciprocal tariffs for countries that have not imposed similar duties in return. As a result, only the 10 per cent tariff on all goods from all countries remains in place, but the suspension does not apply to China. In fact, the tariff on Chinese goods has been increased to 125 per cent. Treasury Secretary Homer Bessent stated that negotiations with individual countries would continue and that Trump himself would be directly involved. This, he explained, is the reason behind the ninety-day suspension. He also noted that the White House has already been contacted by 75 countries and expects that number to rise following the announcement. It is worth recalling that as recently as 7 April, there were rumours of a ninety-day suspension, which were, however, denied by Trump himself.
