Ups opened a new logistics hub at Rome Fiumicino airport. Located in the airport's cargocity, this new gateway covers approximately 2,700 square metres and manages about 15% of Ups's total import and export traffic in Italy. Its prime location close to the runway ensures faster and more secure handling times, aided by advanced technology for customs clearance and package scanning. The new gateway is part of a broader investment plan by Ups in Italy, which also includes a new daily direct flight to the company's European hub at Cologne/Bonn, operational since November 2024 using a Boeing UPS 767 aircraft. This route has added around 350 tonnes of weekly cargo capacity, enabling more flexible pick-up times and earlier deliveries in Rome and the wider Lazio region.
"With this logistics centre, we're providing an even stronger link between Made in Italy products and the global market," said Paco Conejo, Managing Director of UPS Southern Europe. "Together, the facility at Rome Fiumicino and our recently introduced flight allow us to effectively support businesses in central and southern Italy in growing internationally. This achievement has been made possible thanks to the valuable collaboration with Aeroporti di Roma, our partners, and the dedication of the entire Ups team."
Speaking at the inauguration, Aeroporti di Roma’s Chief Aviation Officer, Ivan Bassato, stated: "This investment marks a significant step towards improving logistics efficiency and enhancing international connectivity at Rome’s airport. In 2024, Fiumicino saw cargo traffic rise by 44% compared to the previous year, a figure three times above the national average, confirming the strategic importance of our airport in the global trade scenario. We remain committed to developing increasingly advanced and sustainable infrastructure to support continued growth in the cargo sector."
