European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen presented the lineup for her new Commission, which includes Greek politician Apostolos Tzitzikostas as the proposed Commissioner for Transport. His appointment will need to be confirmed by the European Parliament. Tzitzikostas, who is currently the First Vice President of the European Committee of the Regions, is set to replace outgoing Commissioner Adina-Ioana Vălean. He will take on the portfolio of Sustainable Transport and Tourism, overseeing the mobility of goods and people — sectors deemed vital for the European Union’s competitiveness and transition efforts.
Apostolos Tzitzikostas holds a degree in Political Science, Foreign Policy, and Diplomacy from Georgetown University in Washington, as well as a master's degree in European Public Administration and Economics from University College London. He began his career in the office of the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the U.S. Congress before transitioning to the private sector. He later moved into politics with Greece’s center-right New Democracy party, first serving as a member of the Greek Parliament for the Thessaloniki district in 2007, and subsequently joining the European Committee of the Regions in 2015.
